During the height of his popularity, 19th century Vienna was waltz mad, as the nobility and workingmen swooped and whirled to Strauss' beautiful dance tunes. Soon the waltz craze spread throughout Europe, then to America, and no party was considered complete without a group of musicians and a patch of floor large enough to accomodate a few waltzers. Over time, however, as musical tastes changed, Strauss's music came to be regarded as 'classical,' not popular, and the waltz itself became emblematic of a glittering, elegant, distant past.
